Late Victorian / Edwardian Navy Straw Bonnet with Velvet Trim & Silk Ties
A beautiful bonnet dating to the late Victorian to early Edwardian period, circa 1898-1905, crafted from finely plaited deep navy straw.
The crown is constructed from tightly coiled spiral plaits of straw, forming a structured concentric design characteristic of turn-of-the-century millinery. This technique creates a sculptural crown while keeping the bonnet lightweight and elegant.
The piece is finished with rich deep navy velvet trim, which softens the structured straw and adds a refined tonal contrast. The bonnet retains its original silk ties, allowing it to be worn or displayed as it would have been at the beginning of the 20th century.
The deep navy straw is particularly striking, as many surviving straw bonnets from this period are found in natural or honey-coloured straw. The monochromatic palette gives the hat a sophisticated appearance typical of late Victorian and early Edwardian fashion.
Bonnet styles such as this were worn tied beneath the chin, framing the face and complementing the high-necked silhouettes fashionable at the turn of the century.
A charming and well-preserved example of late 19th to early 20th century millinery, ideal for collectors of antique fashion, costume reference, or display.
