This beautifully preserved early 20th-century Yemeni ceremonial belt features a traditional Jambiya double-edged steel tapering blade encased in a finely chiseled, dense floral metallic sheath. The accompanying ceremonial belt is intricately worked in silk and metal thread with a striking central band of meandering interlaced arabesques.
Suspended from the textile belt are a series of traditional, ornate silver-alloy “Hirz” (or Ta’wiz) amulet cases. Historically, these hollow containers were used to carry written protective prayers. They feature exceptional Yemeni metalwork craftsmanship, utilizing traditional wire filigree and tiny granulation work. The delicate dangling charms hanging from the base of the amulets were traditionally believed to ward off negative spirits with their gentle chime.
Rather than a functional weapon, the Jambiya is fundamentally a cultural art piece and an essential symbol of status and prestige.
