An Anglo-Indian umbrella, with a silky black fabric canopy, bamboo wood shaft and an intricately worked silver-coloured metal handle. The handle is decorated in repoussé and chased relief, with a series of arched panels with standing female deities, divided by bands of foliate ornament.
The piece has a strong ceremonial quality, it may have been used as a dress umbrella or as a high-status decorative object.
The contrast between the dark canopy, warm bamboo and sculptural silver handle gives the piece a strong and desirable presence. A beautiful object for display in your umbrella stand and it would be particularly well-suited to a collection of Indian metalwork. There are signs of use, particularly towards the top end of the umbrella.
