A small but charming 19th-century tinned copper Paan Dan leaf box. C.1850.
A beautiful example of homeware from India, made from tinned copper or copper alloy with a domed lidded form, shaped finial and front clasp.
Traditionally, boxes of this kind were used to store the ingredients for preparing betel or paan, betel leaves, areca nut, lime and spices. It also stores other ingredients such as zarda, supari, kattha, choona, clove and cardamom.
They were often kept often kept within the domestic interior as both practical and decorative objects. Lid lifted, you. will find a beautiful hand-turned tray.
This example has a wonderfully architectural silhouette, with its rounded body, raised domed lid and small pointed finial giving it a strong presence.
The surface has a richly aged darkened patina, with areas of wear, oxidisation and old marks throughout, adding to its sculptural quality. A strong decorative piece for a shelf, table or cabinet, particularly within an interior built around antique metalwork, South Asian objects, and textural pieces.
